Meet Paul, age 60, avid supporter of the King St Cycle Track and an active @hblridealoha member. He said he's been riding for 20 years for his health, feels safer in the separate lane, and can't wait for the @bicycleprogram to get installed. This friendly chat would never have happened if we were in cars, isolated and zipping by. For BBH, we feel that it's moments like this that exemplify all that we advocate: safety (thank you @mayorkirkhnl ), healthy lifestyle, connected infrastructure, and meaningful urban interactions. #bike #Honolulu #instahi #betterblockhawaii
McCully-Moiliili Neighborhood Board Chair, Ron Lockwood, paints over graffiti on city posts. Not everyone has official approval to do what Ron does, but you should feel free to contact him if you wanna help. Not something you see everyday, but that's why you gotta #knowyourhood #betterblockhawaii #instahi
Scary moment during the McCully-Moiliili #walkstoryBBH this morning when a vehicle slammed to a stop as our group crossed King St. Hard to see flashing warning lights during the day... glad there was power in numbers and nothing happened. Maybe slower speed limit? #knowyourhood #betterblockhawaii #instahi
Our #walkstoryBBH group crossing King St and Mililani St en masse! Good thing there were few cars because crossing a 4 lane road with no traffic lights is kind of scary! #pedestrians #instahi #betterblockhawaii
Mahalo to Keahe, Steve, and John for being our guides on today's #walkstoryBBH in the Capitol District! #instahi #betterblockhawaii
Arborist Steve Nimz tells us that Banyan is used as a common name for plants in the Ficus family, but Ficus benghalensis is the true Banyan... named after a tribe in India that used to sell merchandise under these shaded canopies. These trees by Iolani Palace are from aerial roots of the original tree... unfortunately one of them is infested by termites. #walkstoryBBH #betterblockhawaii #plantnerd
The area known as the Capitol District was once called Kou, so named after the major Chief Kou. This area was known for its yam fields, loi, and Hala groves. From Punchbowl to the water is meant to be a view corridor. The building was inspired by the Bauhaus and meant to symbolize Hawaii; constructed in 1959. #betterblockhawaii #walkstoryBBH
